French Household Consumption Rises Less than Forecast
France's household consumption expenditure on goods increased 0.2 percent from a month earlier in October 2019, following a revised 0.3 percent fall in the previous month and missing market expectations of a 0.3 percent advance. Manufactured good spending bounced back (0.3 percent vs -1.2 percent) and food product purchases accelerated (0.8 percent vs 0.6 percent), while energy consumption decreased (-1.5 percent vs 0.2 percent).

French Household Consumption Unexpectedly Falls
Household consumption expenditure on goods in France fell 0.4 percent month-over-month in September 2019, after an upwardly revised 0.1 percent gain in August and missing market expectations of a 0.1 percent rise. It was the largest decline in household consumption since February, mainly due to the downturn in manufactured good spending (-1.3 percent from 1.3 percent in August). Meanwhile, food purchases rebounded (0.5 percent from -0.8 percent) and energy consumption dropped at a softer pace (-0.1 percent from -0.9 percent). Considering the third quarter as a whole, household expenditure on goods went up 0.4 percent compared to the previous period.

French Household Consumption Flat in August
Household consumption expenditure on goods in France was unchanged in August 2019, following a 0.4 percent growth in the previous month and missing market expectations of a 0.3 percent advance. The increase in manufactured good spending (1.1 percent vs 0.6 percent in July) was offset by a drop in food purchases (-0.9 percent vs 0.4 percent) and energy consumption (-1.3 percent vs 0.2 percent).

French Household Consumption Rebounds
Household consumption expenditure on goods in France rose 0.4 percent from a month earlier in July 2019, recovering from a revised 0.2 percent contraction in June and slightly beating market expectations of 0.3 percent gain. Manufactured good consumption increased for the third consecutive month (0.6 percent vs 0.5 percent in June), driven in particular by durable good purchases (1.6 percent vs 0.5 percent) while clothing consumption dropped (-1.2 percent vs 0.7 percent). In addition, food consumption rebounded slightly (0.3 percent vs -1.3 percent) due to the consumption of processed agri-food products; and energy consumption increased slightly for the second month in a row (0.3 percent vs 0.4 percent).

French Household Consumption Unexpectedly Falls
Household consumption expenditure on goods in France fell 0.1 percent from a month earlier in June 2019, following a downwardly revised 0.3 percent gain in the previous month and missing market expectations of a 0.2 percent rise. Food consumption dropped 1.1 percent after increasing 0.2 percent in May, mainly due to a decline in both agricultural goods and processed agri-food products. Meanwhile, energy consumption rose (0.2 percent vs a flat reading) driven by a rebound in refined products; and manufactured good purchases advanced further (0.7 percent vs 0.5 percent) boosted by durable good purchases, textile-clothing and other manufactured good.

French Household Consumption Rises in May
Household consumption expenditure on goods in France increased 0.4 percent from a month earlier in May 2019, following a downwardly revised 0.3 percent growth in April and beating market expectations of 0.2 percent. Energy consumption rose slightly (0.6 percent vs 3.3 percent in April) boosted by gas and electricity consumption; while manufactured good purchases rebounded (0.6 percent vs -1.5 percent) driven by durable good purchases, textile-clothing consumption as well as other manufactured good consumption. On the other hand, food consumption was flat, as the increase in fresh product consumption offset the decline in agri-food product purchases.
